Easter traditions and customs

Easter is the most important Christian holiday commemorating the Resurrection of Christ. The faithful prepare for it during Holy Week, which begins with Palm Sunday. Of special significance are Maundy Thursday, commemorating the institution of the Eucharist, and Good Friday, the day of Jesus’ suffering and death, when strict fasting is observed. The central moment of the holidays is the Easter Vigil and the solemn Mass on Easter Sunday. An important and widely practiced custom is the blessing of food, which takes place on Holy Saturday. A traditional symbol of Easter is painted eggs (pisanki), representing new life and spiritual rebirth.

Traditional Easter dishes

Easter is a time of joyful celebration, and communal feasting is an important element of Catholic tradition. On Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the faithful observe fasting by eating light meals, while on Easter Sunday a festive Easter breakfast is held. Eggs – a symbol of new life – are indispensable on the table, served with horseradish and mayonnaise. A popular dish is sour rye soup (żurek) made with sourdough, white sausage, and egg. Among cold cuts, ham, baked pork loin, and pâté reign supreme. The faithful also enjoy traditional Easter cake (babka), mazurek cake, and cheesecake. Easter breakfast is eaten with family and loved ones, enjoying the shared time and joy of the Resurrection.

Easter in the mountain climate

Easter holidays in the mountains are a combination of tradition, regional folk customs, and a unique atmosphere. The faithful can attend a solemn Mass in the mountain church, where traditional songs are sung. On Good Friday, residents and visitors of Zakopane visit numerous chapels and wooden churches, and the outdoor Stations of the Cross take place at Krzeptówki. On Easter Sunday, the faithful pray at the symbolic Lord’s tomb. Easter breakfast is celebrated with regional specialties such as oscypek cheese and potato flatbreads (moskole). At NOVA Residence, Easter is exceptionally festive, with relaxation in the wellness zone and family celebrations guaranteeing unforgettable moments.
